- 1 1/2 yards plain fabric
- 1/2 yard patterned fabric
- Scissors, thread, sewing machine (:
Next cut a strip that is 2.5″ by 40″ long. (for this strip I used the left over fabric from my duvet cover). Iron in half right sides together and then sew the long side shut. Then using the dowel rod method I explain in my duvet cover tutorial turn right side out. Iron so the seam in on the bottom then using a ruffler foot set on the middle setting, or use a basting stitch and ruffle yourself so the finished length is 20″. After it is all ruffled pin the ruffle on the seam between the solid fabric and the patterned that you sewed together. Sew in place. Next take the 18″ by 18″ (the back piece of the pillow) and lay it on the front piece right sides together. Then sew shut leaving about a 5″ opening at the bottom. Then fill with polyfill.
Now to close the bottom I hand sew it shut. Thread your needle and double it so you have twice the strength. Then knot the thread. Fold the unfinished edges of the pillow in. Then starting on one side, stick your needle through the unfinished edge that is folded in. Not on the outside. Then thread it through the other side, repeat. Your going to kind of get a ladder look going on. Every once in awhile pull tight. This is the best way I have found to hide your stitches when closing a pillow. When you get to the end knot your thread and cut!
