If you are starting a handmade business it can be hard to actually start! All the things you need to do, or decide can seem a little scary, and maybe discourage you to give it a go. I know life can get pretty comfy right where you are (at least it can for me!). It is hard to step out and try something new. Fear and doubt can fill your mind. One thing I have learned though, if you never try, you will never know. So my biggest suggestion is to just start. You will learn a lot along the way. If you wait until you are “ready”, you will never start. I think in life, the biggest lessons are learned through trying something new. I am a huge believer in reading and learning from others, but until you actually do it for yourself and learn from doing, you won’t completely get it.
So just start! Start dreaming, making goals, designing, creating, sharing. Dive in, don’t be afraid of failure. Starting doesn’t mean you have to do something huge. It can be a small step of just making goals! The choice to go to the library and pick up a book to help you learn. To start a blog, or Facebook page. Anything that gets you moving in the direction you want to go. It is not something that will happen instantly, be patient! Don’t be afraid of failure or mistakes. They will most likely happen, but don’t let that get you down. They are actually good, because we can learn from them. No one is perfect, find comfort that you are not the only one in the world who experiences failure, or makes mistakes. I hesitate to even use the word failure. I like to think of it more as “well that didn’t work out for me, so I am going to try something else.” Keep trying, keep going! When I was trying to get my Etsy shop off the ground, in the beginning it just wasn’t working for me. I began to get discouraged and start believing that it was a failure. That I failed. But I couldn’t stop thinking about how I wanted it to work so bad. Things kept popping up that would encourage me. I saw a quote that went something like: “If you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop working for it.” When I was in the process of starting, someone also told me, I love your what you have for sale now, but if it isn’t working, don’t be afraid to try new things, come up with something different to make! It really encouraged me to keep trying. To not just settle or give up. So if you know this is what you are supposed to do, don’t let discouragement stop you. Keep Going!
I highly recommend the book Start by Jon Acuff. He is funny, but also very helpful in getting your dreams started! You can buy it here.
