We can see it all around us. Different incomes, different health conditions, different GPA’s, different struggles, we all face different battles. Life does not deal us out each an equal hand. Life is not fair. Life does not say we all deserve a mansion on a hilltop by the ocean. Yet it is so easy to believe that we deserve something. If that person got it, I should get it too! Or it’s not fair how they treated me. Unfair things happen all around us whether we like it or not. It is our choice to determine if we let it make us better or bitter. If we choose to dwell on a situation not being fair, all it does is rob our joy. It is kind of like the quote on grudges/resentment: “Holding a grudge is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” If we hold a grudge toward life being unfair, we are only hurting ourselves. Becoming bitter about the situation will not make the situation magically fair. If we can realize and become okay with the fact that life isn’t fair, and never will be, we can gain a contentment through hard times that wouldn’t be there otherwise. Sure I still get upset when things don’t go the way I think would be “fair”, but I have learned to let it go much quicker, since I know I can’t make it fair by stewing over it. If someone has treated me unfairly, I try and pray for them instead of holding a grudge toward them. It makes me feel much better, even though it goes against every grain of human nature. By letting go of the feeling of entitlement, we will water the seed of contentment.
Even though life may not be fair, and we are all dealt different hands, we are all created equal. God loves each and everyone of us just the same. We are all given grace if we want it, it is not held back from us. Jesus suffered a very unfair death so we could have grace today. That thought alone makes me realize I have no reason to complain about life not being fair. We are all given grace to handle this unfair life. Instead of becoming bitter about a situation, lets thank God for the grace and love he is so willing to bestow on each of us!
Scripture for the heart:
Romans 5:20-“…But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.”
Homework for the heart:
Is there a situation in your life right now that you don’t feel is fair? Instead of dwelling on the unfairness of it, ask God to help you overcome the bitter feelings. Try and extend grace toward the situation, and if it is a person, pray for them. Try and remember that your attitude toward the problem can make all the difference in the world!
