There is so much life can throw at us. It seems that life is growing busier and busier. We have so many things to fill our time with. Pretty soon our life is so chaotic and busy we can forget to take a moment and just rest! It is easy to say yes, yes, yes. Then feel overwhelmed by all our commitments. Learning that no is an okay word can increase contentment. Even the things we think are noble and need to say yes to, are okay to say no to depending on what is going on in our life at the moment.
By making a list of things that are most important to us in our lives, we can begin to weed out the things that will just drag us down. It is easier to get a clear picture of things to say no to. Maybe there is something in your life right now that you don’t really have a choice on. You may have to say yes to something. Instead of becoming frustrated, set some goals around it. An example from my life is Loren working extra hours. I would love to say no, please come home after work instead of working more. At this moment, I do need to say yes to it. But we have set goals and a time limit on how long it will last. Even though I am saying yes to it, we have created a plan that I can see an end to. It helps me through long evenings when I know this won’t last forever.
I like Zig Ziglar’s perspective on a balanced life. He teaches that we need to have a balance of all these categories. Are we saying yes to to many things in one category?? Maybe we need to start saying no in that category to balance out our life.
Scripture to ponder:
Ecclesiastes 3:1- “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”
Homework for the Heart:
Make a list of what is most important to you in life. Make a list of what you are currently saying yes to. Is there anything that needs to be taken off the list to balance out your life more? Is your life balanced according to Zig Ziglar’s wheel? Or is there one area that is eating up all your time.
If there is something in your life you have to say yes to at the moment, make goals and set a time limit to ensure it won’t last forever.
