A great way to take the focus off our ourselves and our current problems is by helping out someone else. Not only does this take the focus off of ourselves, we leave feeling more blessed than the person we helped out. I have found that when I am feeling a little down and want to throw a pity party for myself, by spreading a little encouragement or act of kindness someone else’s way helps me to get out of my sad little mood!
It can be something as big as going on a mission trip, to something as small as sending someone a card of encouragement. Sometimes it is harder to give of our time than it is to give money. It is super easy to just write a check. In our already busy lives sometimes taking a moment to give a bit of our time seems hard. There is a time and place for everything, so just go with what works for you!
Not only do we receive a blessing from helping others, depending on what we do we can get a glimpse into other’s lives who may be less fortunate than you. Helping out at a homeless shelter, participating in a Christmas gift program, or going on a mission trip to another country can really open our eyes to how blessed we really may be!
No matter what you may do to help others, I promise your heart will feel more content afterward! Knowing you encouraged or helped someone out in some way will brighten your day!
Scripture to Ponder:
1 Timothy 6:18-19 “That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
Homework for the heart:
Set out to do something kind for someone today. Maybe it is sending an encouraging card or email, letting a friend know how much you appreciate them. Or maybe it is thinking about getting involved in volunteering somewhere. Big or small, no act of kindness goes unnoticed!
