I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time really studying the word. I have sort of been battling with this conviction recently that I am just reading the bible out of habit and that I need to dig in more. My mind is so busy sometimes (probably more like all the time) that I can sit down to read a chapter only to get finished and realize that I retained nothing from it. So I become frustrated and read it again, just to find I get the same results. So I place my bible back on the nightstand and start my day. I have done the Jesus Calling Devotional and that really helped me to focus on verses and meanings. But since getting done with that I have gotten back into the trap of reading but not retaining. I know I could do the Devotional again, but I really want to dig into whole chapters.
I have never really been a person to sit down and write in a journal. But lately the whole journaling concept has been popping up in my life. So I decided to buy me a journal and try this out! At the very beginning of the journal I allotted one page to each day of the week. I then wrote a different topic to pray for that day. Because you see, my prayer life needs a makeover too. It seems there is so much to pray for that I get overwhelmed and resort to praying for the same things over and over. For example Monday will be any prayer requests from our church. So if anyone is struggling with health etc. they get prayed for Monday. Each day has something different to pray for. Of course I will still pray for the basic things everyday. But I felt this was a good way for me to actually make other important prayers happen. I am slightly a nerd so this form of organization is helpful for me 🙂
On to the journal part. Each day I write the date and the chapter I am reading out of. I am also a sucker for quotes so I downloaded a app on my phone that gives random quotes. I write the quote at the top as a form of inspiration for the day. Then I read the chapter. Next I write down a few verses that really stuck out to me. Then I write a summary of the chapter that I just read.
The last thing I do, and it’s my favorite part is pour my hearts prayer for the day out on paper. I title it the application and prayer page. Where I think about the chapter and how it applies to my life. I write a letter to God so to speak. Expressing thankfulness, sharing worries, asking for forgiveness, and applying what I just read. I have found that I learn from writing, so this is really beneficial to me. I feel like this process helps me to soak in what the chapter is really telling me.
So far this process is really helping me focus on and study the word. If you, like me, also have a hard time focusing I share this to maybe encourage you to give it a try! Or if you have a way you love to study the word, I would love to hear it! I am always up for learning new things!
