I am super excited to be participating in “Touring through blogland!” It is such a fun way to share a little bit more about myself with my readers! I was asked by Deonna at The Child at Heart Blog to be apart of this fun tour! Go check out her blog, she has so many fun DIY projects and more! She just recently gave me a “baby sleeping” door sign, and did a post on how to make your own! It is super cute 😉
Let me introduce you to my little family! I am married to Loren who I met in Juarez Mexico on a mission trip 8 years ago! We are expecting our first baby (a baby girl!!) September 1! I am hoping she graces us with her presence sooner rather than later ;). He was from Iowa and I was from Indiana, we now live in a quiet little town in central Illinois that has truly become home to us. We both love doing things ourself. Our house is dotted with projects that we have worked on together. I love looking at something we both poured our hearts into. It really makes our house a home!
And of course I had to add a picture with all three of us since little baby is a part of our family now too!!
My new sliding barn door that Dad and Loren worked on together. We got a plain wood barn door without a track. I showed dad an example of a track I liked and he worked his magic. I told Loren I wanted a boarder added around the door and the diagonal wooden piece added. He finished it off by painting and antiquing it.
One of my most popular posts was this DIY duvet cover.
What am I working on now?
I am actually starting to slow down with house projects since baby is due shortly. We just got done with her nursery and we just finished my new craft room and entry way. So our big projects are done, which feels great. I am mainly working on stock-piling as many wallets and zipper pouches as I can for The Ruffled Stitch. That way I can re-open my shop with ready to ship items after baby is here!
How does my work differ from others?
I am a self taught seamstress. In high school I took one sewing class and did not like it at all. I think it was because I didn’t like following patterns. I don’t do will with following things to the T. I would rather take bits and pieces here and there and make something completely my own. Once I started seeing all these tutorials on Pinterest a couple years ago, I tried my hand at sewing again. I now create my own designs and patterns and absolutely love it. When I get an idea in my head I sit down and it is trial and error until I get it right. Who knows, maybe patterns would just be easier, but I love the freedom to create something completely on my own!
Why do I create/write about what I do?
I started my blog when I started my Etsy shop. I didn’t really think I was a writer, I just thought you were supposed to have a blog with an Etsy shop. I neglected it at first, but slowly I have found my voice and what I really love writing about. I want to inspire you to believe in yourself and use all your talents. To inspire you to “keep going” at whatever you are doing. Each stitch I sew for The Ruffled Stitch and each tutorial I post comes from a dream I didn’t think possible for me. A talent I didn’t really believe I had. I hope to encourage you to find your passion, and to be brave and believe in yourself. Nothing awesome never comes easy, but it is so worth it!
How does my creative process work?
I find inspiration all around me. I usually see something I like and then tweak it to make it my own. Or I see a couple of different things and put them all together to make my own piece of art. I love how I can find a picture of something I like for the house and show my dad and Loren the original picture/project. Then comes “except can you do this, and this, and maybe this instead?!?” Then they work their magic!! Kind of like my new sliding barn door! For The Ruffled Stitch I am constantly trying to make a product that is useful and cute. I try to imagine what I would like in a product. I love any kind of embellishment from ruffles, to bows, to appliqués. Anything that makes a product unique. A little secret: I have come up with color combo’s for a wallet by seeing an outfit someone was wearing. You never know your outfit may inspire a wallet 😉
