I love writing on this little blog. It’s my way of thinking through things, documenting life events, sharing about my shop, and hopefully encouraging you! So while it is fresh on my mind, I want to share with you my birth story. I enjoyed reading a few birth stories before I had Kina. I know no birth is the same, but by reading others, it seemed to make it seem do-able. Other people live through it so I can too 😉 My goal was to make it through with no epidural. I wanted as natural birth as possible.
The Monday before my due date I went to be around 9. I had been having braxton hicks throughout the day off and on, probably a little more than normal, but I didn’t time them or anything. As I was trying to fall asleep the braxton hicks started getting achy and crampy. My back was hurting too. So I started timing the contractions. They were consistently around 45seconds to 1 min long and were 4-6 minutes apart. I was sure we would end up at the hospital that night. Around 1:00 AM they started getting father apart and shorter in length. So I went to sleep and woke up in the morning with no baby. I was pretty bummed. That following Thursday I had an appointment, I was sure I would be dilated after all that! But to my disappointment, I was still not dilated.
So my due date came and went and I was back to my doctor for an appointment the following Wednesday. I was prepared to hear the news of nothing new. But to my great delight I was dilated to a one. He did a membrane sweep and I was on my way. That evening I started noticing my braxton hicks were getting a little crampy again. I wasn’t about to get my hopes up so we went to bed without further thought. At around 12:45 I woke up and they contractions were still there and getting stronger. I walked around the house again and timed them. They were again about a min long and about 4-6 min apart. Finally around 4:00AM I said lets go. They were getting pretty strong. We got to the hospital and they checked me, I was only 1 and a half. What?! So disappointing. But they let me stay awhile. Loren and I walked the halls and around 7 they checked me again. I was a 2. So they decided to keep me. We kinda just hung out, randomly we would walk. At 11:00 I decided to take a nap. When I woke up I looked at the little fetal monitor thing and realized my contractions really tapered off, almost stopped. I was like oh no, I am not going home!! We got up and walked again. They started up again and at 1:00PM my water broke. Now there was no going back, we were going to be meeting little baby soon! I was at 3 after my water broke. My contractions were pretty painful after the water broke. Not to much smiling anymore, just trying to get through each one! At 5:00 they did another check and I was at a 5. It was at that point I was starting to think, man I may not make it without an epidural. If it takes as long as it did to get this far to get the rest of the way, I’m not gonna make it! I decided to just keep going and think about it. With each contraction I repeated Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” I sure wasn’t able to do it by my own strength. Somehow two hours passed and around 7:00 I really felt like she was super low and I felt the urge to push. They checked me and I was a 9. They called my doctor and told me to try not to push. That was hard. Finally they gave me the okay to start pushing, my doc still wasn’t there and that made me nervous, but this baby wanted to come! He showed up shortly after I started pushing. At 7:25PM little Kina made her arrival. I was one exhausted mama, but so glad I made it! My sweet husband was a huge help. He kept encouraging me and telling me I was doing great. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without him!
I am so thankful God blessed us with a healthy baby girl, and a safe delivery. Today our little Kina is 2 weeks old. She is growing like crazy! She truly is a little miracle!
