When I started The Ruffled Stitch, I was sewing away in my craft room for hours at a time. After awhile it got pretty boring to listen to just the buzz of the sewing machine. So I started listening to podcasts to pass the time. One show I started listening to was Dave Ramsey. I had heard about him, and even listened to him randomly in the past, but never really listened consistently. We actually were in a pretty tight financial situation at the time. I had prayed about leaving my job as being a Physical Therapist Assistant due to many different things. We really felt lead to try out this handmade business thing. I knew when I had kids I would want to stay home, but I also knew I really wanted to do something from home. I had a passion for sewing, so hence the beginning of The Ruffled Stitch. Going from two incomes, to one was a big change. We had always been pretty good savers, but we also did what we wanted. We didn’t have a budget so we didn’t really know where our money was going. Dropping to one income really made us look at our money and how we were spending it.
Enter Dave Ramsey’s plan. I checked out the book Total Money Makeover and Loren and I read it together. Like I said before, I also listened to his show every day. It was so encouraging to hear the callers who paid off debt, the callers who started their own business and succeeded, and everything in between. It kept me accountable to our budget and it made this whole change actually work. We started telling our money where to go, instead of wondering where it went.
We never have had credit card debt. We did have a car loan that we paid off shortly before I quit, so we thought we were pretty good. However, when we refinanced our house, they had to break it up into two loans. The second loan was for $10,000. After listening to Dave, I learned that if a second mortgage was lower than half your annual income it was technically debt and you were supposed to roll it into baby step two. I love steps and plans, and I really wanted to be “debt” free, so we decided along with dropping incomes, we were also going to pay off this $10,000 loan as quickly as we could. Crazy? Maybe. But it was so good for us. It taught us so many valuable lessons, it was really tough, but so worth it. In 5 months we reached our goal. I really don’t want to say our income during that time, but I will say it was below the national average income to give you an idea.
I want to share our story with you to give you hope. You can do it too. When you reach your goal, when you become debt free, it is such an amazing feeling. To learn saying no, to learn to delay pleasures for a greater good, is such an awesome thing! That has been a couple years ago, but since then we have been on a budget and are continuing to follow Dave Ramey’s steps.
I am very thankful for Dave’s teachings, and from listening to the show I learned you can go and watch him live. There is also free cookies and coffee while you are there. I have been wanting to go ever since I started listening. Finally we got the chance. It was so worth it! We got to meet and talk to Dave which was super cool! That place is so filled with positivity it is incredible! When we walked in we were treated with huge smiles and kindness. You could tell the people there loved their job and couldn’t wait to make your experience incredible. The other thing I noticed about his studio, was there was positive things all over. Quotes on the walls, the debt free board, etc. It was just a reminder to me, that positivity gets you places, negativity doesn’t.
Have you heard of Dave Ramsey? Have you listened to his show, or read his books? I encourage you too. It’s not just about money. It is so much more. So many lessons about life come from following his plan. Discipline, hard work, communication in marriage, positive thinking, how to run a business, and so much more. I know his teachings have impacted so much more than just money in our life. It gives you the courage to do anything you set your mind to. I am so honored to have been able to meet him, and very thankful for what his teachings have done in our life!
