I have been tackling a new project lately. Sewing clothes for myself and Kina. I never really dove into these waters before for two reasons.
1. The common “it’s just not worth it” statement.
By the time you buy all your fabric, the pattern, and spend your time sewing it, it just isn’t worth it. That thinking alone kept me from trying out sewing clothes. Now that I have actually sewn a few things for myself and Kina, I have realized that for me, it is worth it. I know I know, you can get really good deals shopping clearance, BUT I don’t. I just don’t spend the time going in lots of different stores and scouring the clearance racks. I usually hit up a few stores like 2 times a year and get frustrated when I don’t get awesome deals. I am just not a shopper. Its not my fun thing. Sewing is my fun thing. I LOVE it. So my time, really doesn’t count. The sky is the limit and I can make things cheaper than buying them at the high end names. I may not be able to make things cheaper than the clearance rack and target, but that is ok with me because I get a custom look.
2. I hate patterns.
This is one reason I didn’t like sewing. When I first dipped my toes in the water of sewing years and years ago, I was told I had to follow the pattern TO THE T. Not exactly my cup of tea. Just ask my husband, I don’t follow directions and recipes are just guidelines. When I learned sewing on my own I did things my way. Sure I messed up a ton and learned the hard way many times, but that is what taught me and it was good for me. I have always shied away from patterns since learning to do it on my own. Just recently I had the desire to make patterns and sell them. So to learn more about them I began trying some out. I have also learned that just because it is a pattern, doesn’t mean you can’t put your own twist on it. All the hard work is done, and you can either stick to it, or create your own spin on it. Now, that is my cup of tea. Best of both worlds. I have discovered a new love.
I am just beginning to make clothes for Kina and I, so please don’t look close. I am still learning. But what I am learning is I LOVE it! I love creating custom things, I love buying fabrics, and I love sewing. It’s my therapy, its what I do for fun. So for all you out there that may be the same way, I am going to start doing some posts on clothes I have made, patterns I love, and more tutorials on sewing in general.
