When you decide to dive into the world of sewing clothes you enter unendless options! You can make anything from a simple clutch to accessorize with to jeans to couture dresses! The sky is seriously the limit. Once you get good at it, you can mix and match patterns to make a custom creation. It is just as fun and addicting as fabric shopping!
If you are starting to learn how to sew clothes, decide what you want to tackle first. Knits are comfy to wear, while woven fabric is easier to sew with. Do you want to sew for kids or adults? Figure out what really excites you the most and what type of clothing you like wearing the best. Speaking from experience I just dove into whatever I felt like making. I got burnt out almost immediately. I had no clue what I was doing and didn’t take the time to learn about one specific thing. I jumped from project to project because they didn’t turn out right. I figured the next one would be better. I didn’t take the time to master one thing so I got burnt out on them all. I am sure you will want to make more than just one type of garment, but if you are beginning I think it is best to take one bite at a time. This will help prevent burnout. If you dive into everything and know nothing about anything, it will be easy to get discouraged. When you start with one area, you will begin gaining confidence and skills that will assist you in the next area. Once you begin to get comfortable sewing garments it is easier to transition to the next thing.
If you are like me, it’s easy to pile too much on your plate. I highly suggest taking the time to think about what it is you want to make. If you choose something simple, it will be easier to master it. If you choose something more in depth and difficult, it will take more time. Just be aware and go in knowing you will need to have patience and not get frustrated with it. Tomorrow we will be talking about how to get great results and dive in deeper on how to focus on one thing.
