You will have two pieces. One longer piece (the piece you will gather) and one shorter piece (the piece the gather will be sewn onto). Traditionally you would sew two basting stitching on the piece you want to gather. Then holding both top threads you would gather that baby to fit the shorter piece.
An Easier Way
You will need some clear elastic for this method. You will cut the elastic to be the same width as the shorter piece. Next fold the elastic in half and mark the center. Next fold both ends to the center and mark on the folds. Repeat this process for the long piece you will be gathering. Now that you have marked quarters on both the elastic and the fabric, lay the elastic on top of the fabric’s wrong side. Take it to your machine and lower the pressure foot overtop the edge of the fabric/elastic. Now you will stretch the first mark you made on your elastic to meet the first mark you made on your fabric. Stitch in place keeping the elastic stretched. When you get past the first mark, stretch again to meet the next mark. Repeat for all marks until you are done. You will have a beautifully uniformed gathered piece once you are done! Next follow the pattern to stitch the two pieces together. If the elastic you used is thin enough, you can rip it out once you are done. You can leave it in too, it’s up to you!
Make sure not to pin the elastic, as it could create a hole that may tear when you stretch it. Just line it up by hand!
There you have it perfectly gathered material that was super easy! Yay!!
