The longer I sew my clothes, the less and less I shop. Like I never shop. The more clothing I make, the more I want to make. Like even underwear. I know, call me crazy, but I love sewing clothes. Obviously sewing clothes takes longer than just buying something, so until I build up my wardrobe, I have to make the most of what I have. Maybe you are in the same boat. You find yourself reaching for handmade over ready to wear, but the problem is, you don’t have a gob of handmade yet. When I make something, I try to make it so it will work for atleast two, if not more, seasons. I thought it would be fun to create a handmade styled series. I will randomly post a handmade outfit, styled for a few different seasons. Hopefully to give you inspiration on making your handmade more capsule wardrobe oriented.
Since making your clothes takes more time than buying them, I find it necessary to make them work for more than one season. This is a great reason to style one outfit multiple ways. What I love even more is, less waste. I am really loving the capsule wardrobe movement going on and I am starting to get way more intentional about what I sew. I try to make myself think about how this will fit into a capsule wardrobe.
My first styled post will be the Boheme Sky dress by Striped Swallow Designs. When I first made this dress, it was long sleeved. I did wear it that way for awhile, but found I actually skipped over it often because of the long sleeves. For some reason it felt like they were too much for the dress so I decided to hack them off. Now that the dress is short sleeve, it is on a huge rotation in my closet. I was a little worried when I chose this floral, I was really hoping it wouldn’t just sit in my closet. I actually have worn it a lot and really love it.
First up: Summer:
I like to pair it with lace up flats. The light weight drapy fabric is breezy and perfect for summer wearing.
Plus I absolutely love how it scoops down in the back, helping me keep cool in the high summer temps!
I am finding I really love the sleepless vest from The Skirt Outlet. I wear it a ton! This dress, paired with the vest for a little added warmth and my beloved toms wedge booties is perfect for fall!
I wore this dress a ton in the winter. I added a cardigan and some boots. Many times I have worn this dress to church with a cardigan and some flats as well.
You could even add a scarf for extra warmth. It gives it a little bit more casual feel as well.
I absolutely love the short sleeved version of this dress. I spans all the seasons with a simple tweaking of accessories! I need to make one of these in a solid color now!! What is your favorite outfit that spans all seasons!?
